Title: Science Will Win
Stephen Hawking says science will win because science is based on evidence whereas religion is based on authority.
Science will win at what? Science and religion address two different things. Gould’s non-overlapping magesteria.
But religion keeps poking its nose into matters of scientific discovery. Like evolution versus creation.
The Pope said evolution is valid. But God creates souls. Why can’t we leave it at that?
Because if there is a god at work in the universe, then that too is a matter of scientific discovery.
I don’t think God will let you come poking around with your microscopes and test tubes.
But we ARE poking around. And the more we discover, the fewer and fewer gaps there are in our knowledge where this god can lay hidden.
I like the idea that there is a force at work that cares about me. Personally. Individually.
I understand that. But it doesn’t make it true.
WHat do you care whether what I believe is true or not?
I don’t.
Fine.
Fine.
Fine!
Just don’t put creationism in the science classroom.
Stephen Hawking also said that the one question he would like answered is why the universe exists. Why there is something greater than nothing.
That’s a question for science to answer.
No it isn’t. Science answers ‘how’ questions, not ‘why’ questions.
Read physicist Lawrence Kraus’ work on a universe that can come from nothing.
That’s a ‘how’ answer to a ‘why’ question.
Exactly!
Okay. So say you close all the gaps and there’s no room for God anywhere. Then what?
Then we live our lives free of superstition and the false divisions imposed by religions.
But what about the meaning of life?
Then you have to create your own meaning.
Creation. Of meaning. Is in our own hands? Hmmmm…
Yeah. Hmmm…
